Planning

Historical Context

In 1919, British India was tense due to the repressive Rowlatt Act. On April 13th, the day of the Baisakhi festival, thousands of unarmed civilians gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh to protest the Act and the arrest of two national leaders. Without warning, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to block the only exit and fire upon the crowd, continuing for about ten minutes until their ammunition was nearly exhausted. The official British inquiry estimated over 379 deaths and 1,200 wounded, though Indian figures are much higher. This brutal act shattered any remaining faith in British justice and became a catalyst for India's full-scale independence movement.

Photography Tips

  • Use natural light; early morning or late afternoon light is best to capture the textures of the brick walls
  • Focus on details: a single bullet mark, a plaque, or a flower left as tribute can tell a powerful story
  • Photograph respectfully. This is not a place for smiling selfies. Capture the mood and atmosphere of the memorial
  • A wide-angle lens is useful for capturing the scale of the grounds and monuments.

Insider Tips

  • Visit on a weekday morning to experience the site with fewer people and more tranquility
  • After your visit, take a heritage walk through the surrounding streets to see centuries-old 'havelis' and markets
  • Consider attending the 45-minute light and sound show in the evening, which narrates the story of the massacre
  • Combine your visit with a trip to the Partition Museum nearby to understand the broader context of India's independence.

Our Partners

  • We are proud to partner with globally recognized and trusted tour platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator, as well as the best-rated local operators in Amritsar, to bring you a curated and reliable selection of experiences.

Fun Facts

  • The walls of the Bagh still bear 36 distinct bullet marks
  • The only entrance and exit to the Bagh in 1919 was a single narrow passage, which was blocked by the troops
  • The memorial was designed by American architect Benjamin Polk and was inaugurated in 1961
  • The soil used in the foundation of the memorial contains contributions from thousands of villages across Punjab.

An Essential, Heartbreaking Experience

You can't come to Amritsar and not visit. But I'm so glad we booked a guided tour. Our guide, Sandeep, didn't just list facts; he told the story with such passion and sorrow. It made the bullet holes in the wall and the story of the well so much more real. Incredibly moving.

Informative and Well-Organized

The tour was very well-managed. We were picked up on time, and our guide navigated the crowds expertly. He gave us historical context that we would have completely missed on our own. Jallianwala Bagh itself is somber, but essential for understanding modern Indian history. A must-do.

A Lesson in History and Humanity

This was a profound experience. The guide provided through the tour we booked was excellent, speaking clear English and answering all our questions. Seeing the site firsthand after hearing the history is something I will never forget. The booking process was simple and efficient.

Moving and Unforgettable

I had read about the massacre, but being there is another thing entirely. The guided tour added so many layers to the visit. Pointing out the original walls versus the new structures, explaining the timeline... it was invaluable. Highly recommend booking a tour rather than just walking in.

A Somber But Necessary Visit

This is a heavy place, but it's a critical piece of history. The tour we joined was part of a larger Amritsar city tour, and the guide did a fantastic job of setting the stage before we even entered. It helps to have that context. The grounds are well-maintained and the memorials are powerful.

Gut organisiert und sehr bewegend

The tour was well-organized and very moving. The guide explained everything very clearly. It's a place for quiet reflection. Combining it with the Golden Temple visit made for a day of incredible contrasts. I recommend booking a combined tour for the full Amritsar experience.

Don't Go Without a Guide

Honestly, without our guide, we would have just seen a park. With him, we saw a site of a world-changing tragedy. He brought the history to life and helped us understand its importance to the Indian people. Worth every penny to book a proper tour.
